Introduction
An important part of growing in Australia is being part of a community. This is crucial for young people to help shape who they become as adults and set them on a path to success. In the film Australian Rules, the protagonist Blacky struggles to find his place within his racially divided community. Whereas in the novel A New Kind of Dreaming, Jamie seeks to live a normal life while in the isolated desert community while his past holds him back. I would argue that Australian Rules best represents the importance of following and challenging community and family standards because the film is more grounded and tackles real life issues with teenagers in Australia.
